Here’s a nice activity to ease you into your literature studies! All you need to do is get out the colouring pens and map those techniques you know you’ll be coming back to time and again throughout your English course!

ACTIVITY 1

Make a map of some technical terms you will need to make use of throughout this course. Include concise definitions or examples that demonstrate your understanding of each technique. You can use examples from your course texts – or choose examples from texts you’ve already read and loved.

Or use lyrics from your favourite songs as in the example at bottom of this page! Be as creative as you want with your presentation!!!

Perhaps focus on techniques you are not confident with. The activity is meant to be relatively relaxing – but use it as an opportunity to lock down your understanding of techniques you might not be so familiar with.

Here’s a list of methods you might want to choose from (but this is not a comprehensive list!):

  • Alliteration (plosive, sibilance etc.)
  • Allusion
  • Anaphora
  • Assonance
  • Caesura
  • Enjambment
  • Euphemism
  • Free verse
  • Iambic pentameter
  • Imperative
  • Internal rhyme
  • Irony
  • Juxtaposition
  • Metaphor
  • Motif/symbol
  • Polysyndeton
  • Rhyme (or lack of)
  • Semantic field
  • Similes
  • Volta
