The new school year has started!! There will (hopefully!) be some lovely times, but there will also be moments when it feels like – in the words of Kurt Cobain – there’s no recess.

The Sound of Pen project offers refuge from that feeling. Each class is aimed at reminding you that you don’t study English just so you can get through the final exams! This subject is about about stories, voices, ideas – and the power words have to move us, challenge us, and help us see the world differently. By connecting the themes at the heart of our course texts to those that fuel the music of our favourite bands and singers, we can really see that.

Think about your favourite song. When you put your headphones on or go to a gig, you’re not just hearing music – you’re feeling something. You’re connecting with a message, with emotion, with rhythm and meaning. Studying English is the same. When we read a novel or unpack a poem, we experience joy, pain, laughter, goosebumps – just like we do when the beat drops or the lyrics hit home.

English helps us understand ourselves and each other. It teaches empathy, creativity, and critical thinking. So let’s not just turn up for the grades – let’s turn up for the stories, the ideas, the questions, and the moments that stay with us long after the lesson ends.

Here’s to a year of learning, growing, and enjoying every single page, line, and word. Let’s make it one to remember.
