Here’s a fun task to keep you occupied and purposeful during an independent study session! Write a letter from one character to another. Perhaps pick a character you’re finding it difficult to make sense of. Use actual quotes from the text and it will help you remember those key words and phrases too!

ACTIVITY 1
To create my model, I listened to ‘Enjoy Your Life’ by Romy and wrote a letter from mother to daughter based on the ideas outlined in those lyrics. The quotes from the song are highlighted in orange. Try also to contextualise – refer to the writer’s real world in a way that feels relevant to the character’s experience. Look at the purple section to see how I’ve done this.
Dear Romy,
Life is fleeting and it should be FUN! There are times when life will come at you with a force you’re not prepared for. You will want to turn and run, but stand your ground. The world is yours and you shouldn’t let anyone push you around. There are lots of people who love you – and there will be more! – but if sometimes you feel like you are dancing on your own, then that’s okay. Savour the moment. Dance like no one’s watching! Be free and ENJOY YOUR LIFE.
Enjoy it, enjoy it, enjoy it!!
And know, too, that when you close your eyes and those anxieties that trouble you come whirling in like a tornado, it doesn’t mean blue skies aren’t on their way. And when you can’t seem to see your dreams, can’t seem to quite locate them, then wake up – because everything you need is out there in front of you.
I know sometimes you’re too afraid to watch the news: it’s 2023 and there are warmongers laying siege to smaller countries; soaring temperatures mean we worry about the environment – and we are in the grip of some kind of democratic recession. But, Romy, there is still a beautiful world out there. And it’s all the more beautiful when you smile. When you’re happy. When you’re enjoying your life!
Don’t forget that.
All my love,
Your Mother x
