This is third class of our 2000trees series and it’s FUN! Find some coloured pencils (or a computer!), put PVRIS on the stereo and consolidate your knowledge of the characters you’ve been studying in the English classroom!

ACTIVITY 1
Find quotes that help you to summarise something important about the characters you’re studying in the GCSE or A-Level English Literature classroom.
Look at how I’ve started the PVRIS model (underneath this paragraph) with a quote that underlines how despairing PVRIS singer Lynn Gunn feels. Quote 2 shows how resilient she is – an aspect of her character that only shines through so clearly as a result of the distress we know she’s been experiencing. The fact that she keeps on fighting is key and so we have 3 quotes that underline that fact. And because she’s strong, then strong again, then strong again, we understand that how strong she is – as a result, adjectives such as indomitable and unyielding start to feel more fitting. In the end, we see that somehow she has held on to her hope and this really cements her determined character.

ACTIVITY 2
Create your character maps. Make sure to use colour thoughfully.
The blackness used to backdrop the section about despair reflects the darkness Lynn is facing and all the other colours are used for good reason (e.g. green signifies growth and makes sense of Lynn’s hopeful state – she believes she will be able to ‘grow’).
