Here at Sound Of Pen, we believe diversification in rock music is immensely important – and since International Women’s Day is coming up this Friday, we thought we’d take the opportunity to celebrate some of our favourite bad-ass female musicians. There’re countless talented women we could choose from, but we’ve narrowed it down to five spread out over the course of the week. So, without further ado…

4. Laura Jane Grace

Laura Jane Grace is without a doubt one of the greatest women in rock music. Whether she’s tearing up the stage with Against Me!, delivering tune after tune of riotous, deliciously in-your-face punk, or providing whole albums that are emotionally raw yet still snarling with her band The Devouring Mothers, anything she touches becomes 10x more intense – just the way it should. Since her coming out in 2012, Grace has been vocal about her experience in the scene as a transgender woman, including the release of her book Tranny. Her activism has ensured that her shows and tours – and the rock community as a whole – are an inclusive and welcoming space, and inspired countless young people.
