Daisy Celebrates The BEST Records Of 2019!
Spring.Fall.Sea, Time + Tide (Undead Collective Records)
I’m not sure whether Spring.Fall.Sea have written this album for me or about me. Either way, they seem to know exactly what’s going through my brain which, yeah, is kind of weird, but also pretty amazing. ‘I always feel too much,’ they sing on Strangers and seriously I swear I was just thinking that very thing. Then, on I Realise: ‘We wanted more than we were ready for.’ Uh huh. Definitely know how that feels too.
Time + Tide is basically my whole life packed into seven tracks. Possibly, it’s the kind of record Enter Shikari or Hundred Reasons would write after a hot chocolate binge – ultra-cosy and perfectly intimate. And I get how that’s starting to make Spring.Fall.Sea’s EP sound more like a packet of condoms than a piece of art but as long as you don’t think listening to Time + Tide will actually stop you getting pregnant or catching an STD, that’s probably fine.
The best thing about Time + Tide is its positivity. The ‘I’m all about this’ refrain is its most potent moment. Whether you’re ‘all about’ saving the planet or something much less impressive, you can shout along to the chorus and feel proud of who you are. That really is the message here – just check out the video and singer Alex Ekong’s ‘Why Be Racist, Sexist, Homophobic, Transphobic When You Could Just Be Quiet?’ t-shirt for proof.
I’m pretty sure this is going to be one of my mum’s favourite records of the year too. ‘My room’s a mess and so am I,’ sing Spring.Fall.Sea which is another thing that strikes a familiar chord – mainly because my mum never stops yelling words to that effect. To hear me howling those lyrics out loud must be pretty satisfying for her – like I’m actually growing up and accepting reality as she sees it. Maybe she even thinks I’ll start tidying up. Or maybe, really, she knows me just as well as Spring.Fall.Sea seem to.
