Daisy Celebrates The BEST Records Of 2019!
Avril Lavigne, Head Above Water (BMG)
Is it even possible not to love Avril Lavigne? Okay, so maybe it isn’t that hard to guess where each of her songs might be going from the moment they start but there’s nothing wrong with that. I mean, I’ve loved how 2019’s been full of music that actually might change the world, but honestly sometimes all I really need is to hear a record that allows me to feel safe right where I am. I get that the universe is shifting – and I’m proud to be part of a generation that might actually make a difference – but surely even YUNGBLUD needs to take a deep breath occasionally.
Head Above Water feels like that deep breath. The huge melodies, the songs that pretty much always arc skywards, the guaranteed emotional explosions – this is escapist pop at its shiniest. Seriously. Close your eyes as It Was In Me reaches its climax and you can pretty much feel the ticker tape raining down from the sky! Then there are the insanely catchy lyrics: on Goddess, Avril rhymes ‘pyjamas’ with ‘bananas’ – and don’t forget the manic Dumb Blonde with its ‘I ain’t no stupid Barbie doll’ hook. This record is why they invented microphones (hairbrushes).
So, to be absolutely clear: singing along to Avril Lavigne’s sixth album is a ridiculously fun and cathartic experience. You can dance yourself dizzy to Bigger Wow, go into full power ballad mode when the title track kicks in or let Warrior help you find your inner Wonder Woman. And so what if you kind of know these routines in advance. Would you get on a bus or a train or a plane without being absolutely certain where it was going? Well, would you?!
