Dream State, Hand In Hand
To say anticipation is high for South-Wales post-hardcore outfit Dream State’s debut would be an understatement. Following last year’s earth-shattering Recovery EP, they took home Kerrang’s Best Newcomer award and one listen to the record will tell you why; their expert blend of melodic rock and churning post-hardcore, with a dash of pop-punk, will hook you instantly. To make us even more excited for this band’s future, they’ve just dropped an anthemic new single, Hand In Hand – it’s an utterly heartfelt track that shows frontwoman CJ Gilpin’s versatile vocals at their finest.
Hand In Hand starts off darkly sweet, the lyrics dripping off Gilpin’s tongue like honey before it all kicks off as the entire band yell ‘fighting for our lives!’. A deliciously crisp hi-hat rhythm leads a face-melting riff into an angst-filled verse; Dream State excel at writing lyrics that delve deep into tricky issues, such as mental illness, without sounding trite.
The chorus is an utter fist-raiser and will undoubtedly be yelled back at the band during their live shows in the next couple of months with passion – it’s the kind of song fans will connect with on an emotional level. ‘I just wanna make it all stop, I’m gonna give it all that I’ve got’ Gilpin chants with growing intensity during the bridge before a Linkin Park-esque breakdown that shows her at her most impressive: when she utilises her gut-punching screamed vocals. If you weren’t already clued in to what Dream State have to offer, Hand In Hand is a fantastic place to start.
